Pregnancy - Breech position – What are my options?

Hi there,

This is my last week before my world will change into becoming a Mommy. I can’t wait to meet my baby girl, but at the same time it is also a little scary. All mothers know that feeling.

To give you a little update about my pregnancy journey so far. I feel good, just big, round and swollen but that is very normal.  I’m having a already stubborn baby girl. From week 30 she decided to lay in breech position (head up, butt down). The check-ups changed to the hospital and at 36 weeks I got the option to try and turn her, they call this in Dutch a – VERSIE -. You get the option if you want to try this or not. The doctors were very nice and gave me a comforting feeling that we will try, but nothing will be forced. Everything was very clear about what was going to happen, very supportive.

First, they will do a check-up on the baby to see how she is doing. Then they gave me a muscle relaxer, what would help give my baby more space. The symptoms for me are that it would speed up my heart rate and give you that volatile feeling.  She will start pushing to help the baby turn to horizontal stage, from there on the baby needs to turn further by herself. During this process they keep checking on the baby to see if she is in any way bothered or distressed by what is happening.

See it as that they help the baby to give a little push into turning, but the baby feels the best what the most comfortable position for them. Sometimes they flip very easily and everything is fine. But it can also be that they turn back or in my case she didn’t even get the baby in horizontal position. She just didn’t want to go there. And so, the answer was her most comfortable position is in breech position. For me personally, it was a painful experience but I’m happy that I ttried, and got my answer.

Now I must prepare for the next step, the birth plan. Here in the Netherlands, they do give you the option to give natural birth in breech position, but the change of succeeding is only 50% and the risks are much higher for the baby. I personally don’t understand given this option, but at the same time I can also respect that you are giving the option you feel most comfortable with. I know for some women it is very important to give birth in the natural way.

For me it is just not an option. I don’t want any risks for my baby girl. Just give all the risks to me and therefore I have chosen to go for a planned Gentle C-section. (I will write about the C-section in a different blog).

The positive feeling I have with this C-section is that it will be planned, so you know upfront when she will come (somewhere between week 39 & 40). This gives you a date to look forward to. I can plan my last moments meeting up with my girlfriends, plan a pedicure, get all groceries in, prep some pancakes, fresh veggie juices, make sure the house is all set up and clean, etc. For me and my partner it gives a lot of peace in our minds.

If my water breaks before then it will become an emergency C-section, so it is possible she comes a little earlier but not later.

See you Back after birth, as a new mommy

Sooooooo exciting……

Ciao, >_<
